The Nature of Books (Rising 3rd to 5th Graders)

Summer Program

Join us for a week of discovering where books come from and then learning how to grow a book of your own! We will be merging the outdoor and indoor classroom as we explore the trees in Baker Park and return to the studio with material to print with. Students will make paper, print with relief images, the sun, write poetry, and at the end of the week, each student will assemble and bind the pages they created into a book of their own.

In this 3 hour class you will learn the rules of the typeshop, the way of the California Typecase, and the basics of use and care of the Vandercook IV letterpress. Each participant will be able to print and take home their own unique creation.

Vandercook, A Broadside Engagement (Rising 9th to 12th Graders)

Summer Program

Over the course of 4 evening sessions youth will learn the art and craft of letterpress printing: setting type, creating images, and then printing a small broadside (up to 12”x15”) or an 8 page folded and sewn book. The first two weeks will be intensive instruction and in the second two weeks, each student will have time to work their individual project to completion.
